Understanding the Queen Court Cards

Do you struggle with the tarot court cards? SOOOO many people do – even people who have been reading tarot for awhile. And there’s a reason for that – there are so many different ways to read each of the court cards, and they can seem VERY similar when you give them a quick glance.

But, when you dive a bit deeper into each one and how they relate together, they’re actually quite easy to understand. This is the third video in our four part tarot court card series, and today we’re going to talk about the Queens.

On my good days, I picture myself as the Queen of Wands, at least as it relates to the work I do here at The Simple Tarot. I don’t know if I’m fooling myself or not, but EVERYONE I know wants to be a Queen or King in their own lives – not to many people are eager to be Pages, frankly.

But there is a specific energy that goes into being a Queen, and this short video will explain all of that, as well as covering all four Queens of the tarot court cards, individually and together, and explain how they are different from the Pages, Knights, and Kings.

The Queen Court Cards

When it comes to the tarot court cards, the Kings and Queens are masters, with the Kings being master of the visible world and the Queens mastering their inner worlds. The Queens are filled with a receptive inner strength, while the Kings are more active and “out there.”

The doesn’t meant the Queens are passive, however. They are active participants in their own world, they just turn their energies inward and they rule their kingdoms with a more behind-the-scenes type of ruling power.

Unlike the Pages and Knights, which are in the beginning and middle of their learning journeys, the Queens have a certainty and self-assurance that comes through hard-won wisdom and experience.

Overall, Queens are internally focused, receptive, and they do their work behind the scenes – although it sometimes seems like they aren’t working at all. They have that magic that makes it seem like wonderful things just happen around them, without their input or direction. But don’t be fooled – the Queens are in control and masters of accomplishing their goals. They just do it with different energy than the Kings do.

The Queens have faced their own dark side and have come out stronger. They remember their periods of limitation, fear, struggle, and stuckness – and although they have moved far past that dark place, they feel a deep empathy for anyone who is currently experiencing that pain.

Their energy is receptive, understanding, compassionate, and intuitive. They are busy and involved, but want to help you. Personal connections are vital to them, even if it seems as if they spend a lot of time alone.

If the Queen is someone in your life, it will be a woman or man who uses surprising levels of strength to protect, nurture, and defend what and who they love. They are far more complex than they seem.

Queens need your loyalty, discretion, and authenticity. They offer connections, wisdom, and mentorship.

When thinking about the Queens, the energy is “I am a wise protector of…

Queens + Cups = a wise protector of kindness and her relationships

Queens + Pentacles = a wise protector of resources and her body

Queens + Swords = a wise protector of justice and fairness

Queens + Wands = a wise protector of her passions, goals, and ideas

Think of someone in your life who has the wise, compassionate, powerful inner strength of the Queens. This may be a man OR a woman. Can you think of anyone who has that deep certainty and sense of self?

Now, are they a Cups? A Pentacles? What realm are they a master of? Combine the energy of the Queens with the energy of each Suit to find out which card they are.

Let’s walk through each of the four Queens individually so you can get a better idea of each of their personalities.

The Queen Court Cards in Your Life

Now that you have a better understanding of these cards, go through each of the four Queens and map them to a person or multiple people in your life, using the Court Card Map. Some relationships to consider include your parents, caregivers, siblings, extended family, lovers, crushes, friends, frenemies, enemies, co-workers, clients, bosses, mentors, teachers, ex-anythings, children, and in-laws. The Court Cards will be people who have a direct influence over your own life, so public figures, politicians, and famous people will not be on this list.

You may have multiple people who match to a single Queen. This is okay. During a tarot reading, you’ll just be able to choose which person seems to make the most sense for the situation and question asked.

You will have one or more Queen cards where nobody matches. This is okay, too. If you come across one of these cards during a tarot reading, you’ll know the card doesn’t match a person in your life, so you can then read the card as a role you need to play, advice you need to take, or as a message.

And, because people are complicated, some people seem to fit multiple cards. They may be a Queen in one area of their life and a Page in a different area. If you can, choose the card that seems to fit the best, but make a note that they have other characteristics.

There’s no right or wrong answer! Just do the best you can to match your people to the cards. And remember, this is all fluid and can change at any time. People may match different cards at different stages of your relationship to them, and they will grow over time just like you will.
