We all have a “happiness level” that we feel comfortable at. When our happiness level gets too high, we sabotage ourselves to bring it back within our comfortable range. It’s messed up, but we ALL do it.
Have you ever gotten a big raise at work and then fought with your boyfriend the next day? Or accomplished a huge project you are proud of, but then spent the next week sick? These are all signs of self-sabotage. A great book about this topic is The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, which I highly recommend.
Sabotage doesn’t need to happen, though, and we can all take action to raise our own happiness levels. In fact, if you want to grow, it’s necessary to address this issue.
To get started, this tarot spread will help you identify your personal preferences for sabotaging yourself to keep yourself safe, small, and comfortable. It will also help you prevent that self-sabotage in the future.
Reading the Tarot Spread
For the tarot spread, shuffle the cards any way you’d like and lay out four cards in the order shown in the image above.
CARD ONE: What are my favorite ways to sabotage my happiness?
This card represents the specific ways you use self-sabotage to keep yourself comfortable and safe. Remember, you are not intentionally sabotaging yourself, so these sneaky tactics will seem normal and perhaps a bit annoying.
CARDS TWO THROUGH FOUR: What steps can I take to prevent self-sabotage?
These cards represent the specific ACTION STEPS you can take today (or within the next few days) to prevent yourself from sabotaging yourself in the ways you identified in Card One. You will likely need to set up routines, reminders, systems, support and/or accountability to prevent self-sabotage in the future.
